Abstract: Thousands of Rotorua people will have to spend $2000 to $8000 to replace fireplaces that don't meet new requirements. There are 7500 wood burners in Rotorua which don't meet the regulations aimed at reducing pollution in the city to acceptable standards.

Abstract: All too often the fireplace in a new home or renovation is an afterthought, chosen with less consideration than cupboard handles or baseboard moulding. But the centrepiece of the home's main room should be chosen with at least as much care as the fridge, stove or other major appliances.

Abstract: The time for homeowners to be determining the aesthetic and practical attributes of a fireplace is ideally before the architect and/or construction crew have finished planning the framework of their new home. Working early with the architect, or in some cases designer, is a first step; making the agreed concept successful can still prove challenging for all concerned when faced with the limited choices available in prefabricated gas or wood fireplaces.
